Few
places in the United States can promise a dry, sunny and warm climate
in early spring and late fall. The southeast corner or Arizona offers
us this plus a wealth of desert life, impressive canyons and historic
copper mining towns.
After arriving in Tucson, we find ourselves
at the Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch and Resort with its fine
adobe architecture and views of Tucson. Set in Tucson's foothills it is
short drive to our first day's hike, in and around the fascinating Sonoran
Desert Museum. The museum provides a wonderful introduction to the flora
and fauna of this desert region.
One day takes us into the land of the saguaro cactus and their improbable
(and sometimes humorous) forms. Another day finds us in Cochise
Stronghold, the favorite camping ground of the Apache Chief and a region
rich in Apache history.
Before
we return to Tucson, we will also spend a night in the copper mining town
of Bisbee and explore another old mining town, Tombstone, site of the
"OK Corral Shootout". The historic Copper Queen Hotel is the
"grande dame" of Bisbee and has been restored to it's original
rustic grandeur. We may also visit the carefully preserved Fort Bowie,
where the story of the bitter conflict between the Apaches and the US
military comes to life. Perhaps the highlight of this tour is our visit
to Chiricahua National Monument. The mountains here rise to over 7000
feet and create a world apart from the surrounding desert. The incredible
rock formations that rise up from the cool, moist forest really have to
be seen to be believed.

This year our forays into the Chiricahuas are made easier by a truly
great find - The Sunglow Ranch. This authentic ranch has been recently
restored and the casitas have a wonderful southwestern flair.
Trips begin with dinner on Sunday and end after hiking and lunch Friday.
- Amazing cacti of Saguaro National Park
- Arizona Desert Museum
- Chiricahua National Monument
- Historic mining towns of Tombstone and Bisbee
- Great southwestern cuisine
