New England Hiking Holidays

South Dakota
The Black Hills and Badlands

South DakotaBlack Hills. Badlands. Devil's Tower. Wind Cave. Names that evoke the mysteries of the landscape. A land where prairie meets forest, textured by colorful rock and granite spires, roamed by bison and pronghorn, home of the Sioux Nation and the unassuming prairie dog. Join us on our hiking holiday as we explore this rich landscape.

We begin our tour in the heart of Rapid City at the historic Hotel Alex Johnson, which was built in 1928 and envisioned as "the showplace of the west" as well as a tribute to Sioux Indian culture. Our first day of hiking takes us to the surreal and eerie landscapes of Badlands National Park. Trails in the park lead us right through the strange rock formations, and the sunlight constantly changes the colors and contours of this formidable land.

Mount RushmoreNext, we head into the heart of the picturesque Spearfish Canyon and the lovely Spearfish Canyon Resort. Nestled within the limestone walls of the canyon, this modern resort is built in the style of the old park lodges. From here we make our way across the border into Wyoming and hike around the dramatic Devil's Tower, and later hike along a nearby ridge for different perspectives of this remarkable landmark. The next day we are back in the canyon region hiking to spectacular viewpoints atop peaks with names like Old Baldy or Crow Peak.

Devils TowerWe lodge for the next three nights within Custer State Park at the beautiful Sylvan Lake Lodge and Resort. The old stone lodge serves as a perfect base to explore the nearby Wind Cave National Park and the fabulous hiking along the expansive rolling lands at the edge of the Black Hills, a wildlife reserve where the prairie meets the forest. We'll look for roaming bison and the elusive pronghorn, and hike through the always entertaining prairie dog towns. We'll also visit impressive Mount Rushmore, considered the "shrine of Democracy", and have the opportunity to hike to Little Devil's Tower and the Cathedral Spires in Custer State Park. This western country that is South Dakota bursts with great beauty and is rich in exciting history.

Come explore this fabled land with us!
