New England Hiking Holidays

England
The Devon Coast and Moors

Devon Hiking ToursOur 8 day tour combines almost everything England has to offer. Medieval villages, bucolic farmland, flower filled gardens, winding footpaths and one of the most impressive coastlines in Europe!

Most of our 8 days will be spent walking the Devon Coast Path and visiting the picturesque towns and villages on England's southwest peninsula. The coast path offers unforgettable walking that combines breathtaking scenery with gentle farmland and scenic coastal villages. Few people realize that the remarkable tides in this part of the world can change by up to 44 feet! History abounds as our trails lead past castles, ancient ruins and into tiny hamlets where many of the cottages date back to the 15th century!

Devon Hiking ToursOur first sight of the Devon coast comes in truly spectacular fashion. After following the wooded banks of the East Lynn River we emerge from the trees on to the sweeping plains of Exmoor. Below us are the red tinged Countisbury Cliffs (the highest sea cliffs in England!), and ahead, nestled at the mouth of the river, is the village of Lynmouth (our favorite spot in England!). Our inn, The Rising Sun Hotel forms the center piece of this harbor side village. The poet, Shelly, spent his honeymoon here in this thatched 14th century hotel and R.D. Blackmore spent time here while writing Lorna Doone!

Before heading toward the south Devon coast path, we take a day to explore Dartmoor. The stark beauty of these high moorlands should not be missed (and nor should the lunch at the 15th century Peter Tavy pub!) The wild Dartmoor ponies that roam the moors are always a delight to see.

The last 3 days we take to the coast path again as we pass sandy beaches and turquoise colored bays on our way to Dartmouth. Dartmouth is a bustling, fascinating, medieval town rich in history (The Mayflower set off from here the second time!).

Our trip begins with 2 nights in the Surrey hills (near London) from where we will walk along the ancient 'North Downs Way' that follows the ridge of chalk downs south of the capital city.

Devon Hiking ToursCream teas, pub lunches, historic footpaths that begin at the inn's doorstep - England, and Devon in particular, is simply custom made for our hiking holidays!

We have made a conscious decision to provide very high quality meals and accommodations on the trip. Our lodgings include: a tiny 14th century inn beside a castle where beams hang low and fires burn bright, two first rate hotels with spectacular riverside settings and an historic traveler's lodge in the heart of a picturesque market town.

Meals range from hearty pub fare to fine continental cuisine.
