Over
the 7 days we follow paths through all these landscapes. We begin our
journey on the sunny Kona coast at the comfortable King Kamehameha Hotel,
named after the man who first united the islands. Day one of hiking takes
us down to Kiholo Bay, with lunch and swimming at The Blue Lagoon - a
wonderful way to start the trip. Other Kona coast highlights are; the
ancient Hawaiian City of Refuge, where native Hawaiians could find sanctuary
in times of strife; the Captain Cook Memorial on the edge of beautiful
Kealakekua Bay and our traditional Japanese dinner at the venerable Hotel
Manago, now run by the 3rd generation of The Manago family!
From
our next base, the historic Volcano House, on the edge of Kilauea crater,
the sights and sounds of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park await. Hikes
lead through still steaming craters, to ancient lava tubes and into
rain forests of Ohia trees and Hapua ferns. With luck, we may spot the
endangered Nene goose, the state bird, wandering through its native
habitat.
On
now to Hilo, the city of flowers. The snow-capped Mauna Kea (13, 796')
forms a majestic backdrop. Along the Hamakua coast are hidden some of
Hawaii's most gorgeous waterfalls and we will discover some of them on
our way to the black sand beaches of Waipio Valley.
Our final 2 nights take us to the town
of Waimea, and the rolling hillside landscapes of Hawaiian cowboy
country!
The last night of our 7 day adventure features authentic Hawaiian music
and dance.
