Whether
it's the beautiful spring flowering of the dogwoods and rhododendrons
or the warm fall colors of the broad leaved oak and hickory trees, Shenandoah
National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia offer a multitude
of hiking pleasures!
Our five day hikes begin in the historic town of Staunton, the
oldest city in the Shenandoah Valley. We stay at the Frederick House in
downtown Staunton, a 19th century inn consisting of five beautifully
restored residences dating back to 1809.
Hiking nearby takes us to splendid spots
just off the Skyline Drive. Hikes to the summit of Turk or Blackrock
Mountain reward us with expansive views of the Shenandoah Valley and the
Blue Ridge Mountains as they stretch north and south. Another day we spend
below the ridge exploring the deep hollows and the many beautiful
waterfalls found there. In springtime
the cascades are accented by azalea and rhododendron blooms and
in autumn tulip and maple trees color our path.
The
last three nights of our tour will be spent enjoying the quiet beauty
of The Sugar Tree Inn. On route to the inn we encounter two of the area's
finest peaks, Mount Pleasant and Mount Pompey. Both rise over 4000' high
and reward hikers with views across the George Washington National Forest,
towards both the Shenandoah Valley and the Virginia Piedmont. At the half
mile high Sugar Tree Inn, we will enjoy hearty breakfasts in the glass-walled
dining rooms, looking out on wildflowers and perhaps watching a chipmunk
scurry by. Should any of the evenings turn chilly, we can gather around
the massive, two story high fireplace amid the two centuries-old hand-hewn
beams.
The
Sugar Tree serves as our base for a visit to nearby Crabtree Falls, the
highest cascade of water east of the Mississippi River! The Mount Pleasant
scenic area with 4000' mountains rewards hikers with views across the
George Washington National Forest, towards both the Shenandoah Valley
and the Virginia Piedmont. The final morning hikers can choose one last
ridge top trail or perhaps a walk along the forested trails of Sheranado
Lake before our final lunch and goodbye.
Trips begin with dinner on Sunday and end after hiking and lunch on
Friday.
