Not only were the hikes excellent, but both guides were fantastic. They went out of their way to ensure everyone had a great holiday. It was a wonderful trip!

New England Hiking Holidays

Vermont 5 Day
The Northeast Kingdom

New England Hiking Holidays - VermontThe Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is an unspoiled and little known corner of this picturesque state. We begin our tour in the heart of the region at the comfortable and relaxed Highland Lodge on beautiful Caspian Lake.

The lodge is a real refuge from the hectic pace of modern life and is a wonderful place from which to set off on some of the most picturesque back roads in Vermont. Lanes lead through tunnels of huge maple trees as we pass traditional Vermont farms and stop to take a picnic beside one of the many lakes dotting the landscape

New England Hiking Holidays - VermontThe jewel of the Northeast Kingdom has to be Lake Willoughby, framed by the sheer, glacially-carved cliffs of Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor. Both peaks rise abruptly out of the waters edge and can be reached by scenic trails that offer frequent lookouts down to the lake below. Perhaps we will see a pair of peregrine falcons diving at 200 mph from their rocky perches.

On our fourth day we head for the town of Stowe, a thriving ski resort that grew up in the shadow of Vermont's highest peak, Mount Mansfield. The Stowehof Inn and Resort sits on 30 spectacular acres of woods, meadows, lawns and ponds and boasts some of the finest views in the northeast. The Grimes family has meticulously renovated this remarkable property and much of the feel of the place reminds us of the inns that we have visited in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. The indoor pool and sauna with it's fine woodworking is a real treat, as is the fine dining with a view!

New England Hiking Holidays - VermontJust one of the advantages of our location is that we can actually head out on foot from the door of the inn. A wonderful network of woodland and meadow trails await those who stroll just minutes from the front door, while the more adventurous hikers can set off for Mount Mansfield. There are numerous routes to the top of this rocky ridge (including by road, if you so desire!) and the summit is a fascinating environment of rare alpine flora and never-ending views.

Trips begin with dinner Sunday and end after hiking and lunch on Friday.
