Woodstock,
Vermont is a hiker’s dream. The town itself is known as the ‘prettiest
small town in America’ and the valley and surrounding hills and
mountains are protected by 6 different parks with a combined 1500 acres
of land and 30 miles of hiking trails. All this awaits us just minutes
from our inn, The Woodstock Inn and Resort. The inn defines sophistication
without pretension and offers visitors Four Diamond lodging and dining
in an historic setting.
Hiking includes the lovely switchback trail that leads up Mount Tom (just
minutes from the inn’s door) for surprisingly spectacular views
down to the town below. The Appalachian Trail also passes through a corner
of town and rewards us with pastoral views of green woods and greener
pastures.
More
ambitious hiking awaits us nearby. At 3150’, Mount Ascutney stands
like a sentinel over the tranquil Connecticut River Valley and rewards
hikers with panoramic views of Vermont and New Hampshire from the open
ledges and look-out tower at the summit. Shrewsbury Peak, on the shoulder
of Mt. Killington (the second highest peak in Vermont at 4235’)
delivers impressive views from the spine of the Green Mountain Range.
We will also include a visit to the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National
Historic Park, with its interpretative programs and over 400 paintings
and prints of American landscapes.
Trips begin with dinner on Friday and end after hiking and lunch on Monday.
